Fasting is a normal part of life for all animals in the wild. When sick, they will nearly always refuse food which is a necessary part of the healing process. By trying to force feed a sick animal, you will not only upset the natural healing forces, but can actually prolong the illness.

Any animal with a fever should not be given any food until the temperature returns to normal.

It is beneficial for their health to have a day or two without food. One day per week should be a rest day with only bones or broth served. This gives the body a chance to cleanse and detoxify. Over-feeding is increasingly common, with many dogs and cats becoming overweight. this puts added stress on their heart and other organs, and is a major contributor to long-term health problems.

You should be able to feel the ribs on your dog, without them being obvious to look at. If you cannot feel them, then they are overweight. Please don't shorten your pet's life by 'killing them with kindness'. Spoil them with love rather than food!

When fasting a dog or cat for health reasons, the following broth can be made up and given in place of regular meals.

Place the following into a large pot and cover with pure, unchlorinated water~ MEATY BONES, CHOPPED CELERY INCLUDING TOPS, CHOPPED CARROT OR SWEET POTATO, A LITTLE PARSLEY, PINCH KELP GRANULES. Simmer for 20 -30 minutes, strain and cool. Give two or three times daily. You may also give freshly squeezed fruit or vegetable juices such as carrot, celery and beetroot or apple, grape or watermelon. Dilute juice 1/2 and 1/2 with water.

Always ensure plenty of pure water is available adding a teaspoon of raw honey for extra energy.

Use Colopet which is a digestive tract cleanser to help cleanse the bowels. Herbal DTX blend may be given for extra support during the fast. Greenpet supplement is an excellent nutritional supplement to use for fasting animals.

Always consult an holistic animal practitioner before fasting a sick or elderly pet. Animals suffering from diabetes, cancer or other serious health problems should not be fasted.
